NEW YORK (DM) October 7, 2016 – In meeting Fabian Nicieza it’s not hard to realize he is at peace. About everything. Perhaps some of it has to do with no longer being tied down to Marvel or DC. He’s somewhat retired from it all at the moment. Let’s face it, never say never. But for now he’s enjoying life on his terms. In fact, you could say he always has lived life on his terms.

Comics by Fabian NiciezaFabian’s a man that looks at everything from the outside. His objective point-of-view is met by acceptance and patience. You would think that someone who makes the move from marketing, (an administrative arm of Marvel) to writing would struggle to find his way. That could not be farther from truth. Fabian planned it that way all along. He always wanted to work in comics but his sensibility and outside perspective of how real life works had him realize at a young age he couldn’t simply break in at age 14, let alone age 19. No, for Fabian his destiny in having a part in Deadpool wasn’t by luck or good fortune – he always wanted be a comic book writer.

(DL) – Jarrett Heather has been a dedicated lifelong "Weird Al" Yankovic fan, but when Al contacted Jarrett in November of 2014, the only back-story Al had on Jarrett was his own admiration of Jarrett's work.

Jarrett Heather Word Crimes Weird Al Yankovic

Jarrett had previously produced a music video in 2010 called Shop-Vac using a form of design called kinetic typography. Al had his own vision for a music video and believed Jarrett was a fit.

Over the course of almost a year the two then collaborated on that music video exclusively for “Weird Al” to be a part of his new album Mandatory Fun.

Unless you've been living under a virtual rock, you should be one of the ten million viewers (and still climbing) that has watched Word Crimes, a parody music video of 2013's summer hit Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke.

This interview with Jarrett reveals some great trivia related to the Word Crimes video and of course Jarrett's experience with “Weird Al”.

(Lars) How did you meet “Weird Al”?

(Jarrett) Al contacted me by email last November (2013). I was just minding my own business, and then "New message from Al Yankovic" was on my screen.

(Lars) Did you doubt it was him at first?...Read more...

(DL) – On a fall evening in 2012 I was driving home from the big city to my girl. It was a long drive to the country to see my girl in the blue polka dot dress. College radio was my time sink. As I left city heading to the countryside a jazz grass band began to play on the radio. Maybe they fit the mood, but they made sense, and they stood out amid indy rock bands. That is...Read more...

(DL) –  It's been a few years since Lbs the movie has been released. Since that time it has reached cult status. I would like to think my personal involvement helped kick-start the underground popularity of Carmine Famiglietti's feature film. See my original Lbs the Movie feature film review here.

What is Lbs?  It's an indie film by Carmine Famiglietti about a fictional character named Paul whom is battling severe obesity to save his life. A remarkable non-fictional element is that Carmine who portrays Paul did indeed lose over 150 pounds in the filming.

I conducted an audio interview with Carmine shortly after the film's release in 2010 where he helped explain many of the subtle undertones of the story.

In 2013 Carmine and I met again in a Skype...Read more...

(DL) – Cy Curnin, front man for one of the 1980's biggest new wave artist The Fixx, spent a late summer afternoon chatting with Lars Hindsley in what was more of a revealing philosophical conversation than an interview.

Lars:
How you doing?

Cy:  Reporting from the field, Cy Curnin, ducking bullets on Melrose.  Harley’s flying past every five seconds, but that’s the way it is, life today in the fast lane.

Lars:  (chuckles) Where are you calling from?

Cy:  I’m calling from LA, Melrose Avenue.  My favorite hall for sitting outside Starbucks because they have free Wi-Fi and I get to watch some pretty ladies go by.  Feeling like an old git.  (laughs)

Lars:  I actually met you once. I wasn’t let down.  I thought you were down to earth.  You seemed to be more in tune to the, I guess down-to-earth movement at the time, for lack of a better term?

Cy:  Yeah, I’ve never really strayed from ...Read more...
